Details – Acrylics on 12 x 16 inch Canvas Sheet.

Not Cornwall but our lovely neighbour, Devon. Looking from the water’s edge of Dartmouth towards the two castle headlands and Kingswear on the opposite shore. Dartmouth is a lovely and historical harbour with beautiful sailing waters. The town has that air of orderliness to it and the small boat on the jetty was suitably tethered (to use a favourite expression of mine), in Bristol fashion.

I recently attended an excellent workshop in oil painting and used the same simple study reference as used in this acrylic version. The most important point I took away from it, for me personally, was that oil paints provide no great advantage in exchange for their encumbrance when compared with acrylics. In fact I find they can stymie the spontaneity and freedom of expression you achieve with the unbroken workflow of acrylics. Controversial to some I know but each to their own of course. I will still occasionally use them (they do feel luxurious to apply) but not as my preferred medium. Maybe in portraits or still life. Watch this space.
