Description
I recently took part in another brilliant painting workshop by Catherine Beale. It was a real surprise to find that watercolours are not as daunting as you might believe and since they are messing with water, are a joy to use. I wanted to understand this media better so that I could make better use of them when sketching outdoors. They are so portable for this task and when you are travelling about on holidays etc but I think I will be using them for much more than this. Other than the piece I produced in the workshop, (Autumn Lilies, which I intend to revisit later and have another go at) this is my first true use of watercolour. One of the lovely things about watercolour is the surface you apply it to; watercolour paper. A high quality product, heavy, often cold pressed to give a more beautiful textured surface. This painting is loosely painted using an old reference of Burgh Island in Devon. I used dry washes as well as wet in wet techniques. I think I may have overworked it a little in places and I’m still not sure if the tones are too bright. What do you think?
