Description
This is a much larger and a slightly abstract version of an earlier painting of a sunset at Trevellas, a piece of coastline within the St Agnes Heritage Coastline of Cornwall that I find I am often drawn to. There are numerous picturesque places along the extensive coastline of Cornwall but this stretch is different. The colours of the scarred and alien looking cliffs are supplemented by the leaching of minerals from long ago mining activities and the area is steeped in local history. I met a person coming along the coastal path this particular time who remarked that he hadn’t realised he had been walking on Mars. It does have that surreal quality and you do need to take extra care. During the beautiful sunset of that day this stretch of coastline looked in flames and in amongst the folds of molten rock, I could with a little creativity, see a Phoenix rising. True, Cornwall has enough myths and legends but I liked the idea and it suited the surreal surroundings and so it arose.
