This painting’s location will be instantly recognisable to many people by the twin peaks of Gull Rock/Carters Rocks, perhaps as the backdrop to a scene in a film or TV production (yes, including Poldark) or as a favourite holiday destination. It is of course Holywell Bay. Although on the day depicted in March of this year, there were very few people to be seen other than one lucky couple who had the beach to themselves, immersed in their surroundings, paddling along the shoreline. It was though a chilly day but very still and beautifully bright which gave up a lovely clear and serene vista of the sea and landscape. The sight of those indefatigable rocks off-shore telegraphed the message that the couple projected as they relished and shared their moment of being in life together.
