Description
In spring of 2022 when travelling back from Spain, my wife and I stopped a couple of days in the lovely historic city of Saragossa (Zaragoza) in Aragon. At its centre is a the beautiful Placa del Pilar and this fountain ‘Fuente de la Hispanidad’ is positioned at its eastern edge. For many people, the contemporary sculpture is at odds with with the antiquity of its surrounding. Though its location may have been poorly chosen, most agree it is a stunning sculpture and it is a favourite place for people to gather and stroll. I arrived as the afternoon sun was dipping behind the perimeter buildings giving a fantastic contre-jour view of the fountain’s tumbling waters and its visitors. It made me think about why we have fountains everywhere. There is I think a primeval reassurance of being close to water. The smell, sound and feel of water as well as the sparkling light that bounces from it. Package it all in a lovely sculpture and you have a little bit of bliss. Saragossa is a city that I really hope to visit again. Stunning architecture set on the river Ebro, fascinating history, great shopping and amazing tapas.
