This is a much larger and slightly abstract version of an earlier painting of a sunset at Trevellas, a piece of coastline within the St Agnes Heritage Coastline of Cornwall. The colours of the scarred and alien looking cliffs are supplemented by the leaching of minerals from long ago mining activities. During the beautiful sunset of that day this stretch of coastline was aflamed by the sunset. In amongst the folds of long ago molten rock, I could with a little creativity, see the shape of a Phoenix rising. True I know, Cornwall has enough myths and legends but I liked the idea and it suited the surreal surroundings and so the phoenix arose.
